Seattle Boat Show

It’s not too late to check out what’s new in the boating world and to get a head start on boating season.  The Seattle Boat Show is still in full swing!  (January 21-30, 2011 at Qwest Field Event Center and South Lake Union).

Activities like fishing, water skiing and recreational boating are gaining more popularity again after a recent slump in boat sales.  Whether you already own a boat, or are thinking about buying one this year, there are just a “couple of ducks” we recommend “getting in a row” before you launch.

Action Step 1:  Take a Boating Safety Class (if you haven’t already). Since the passage of a new law in 2005, boating safety courses are mandatory for operators of boats with 15 or more horsepower.  Implementation of this rule will be on a staggered scale, requiring boaters aged 59 and younger to have a card by 2014.  In 2011, all boaters aged 35 or younger are required to carry a Washington State Boater Education Card if they operate a boat with 15 or more horsepower.

Courses are available in a classroom, online or at home.  Boaters need to pass a test and submit their application, fee and supporting paperwork to obtain the card.

Action Step 2:  Don’t rely on your homeowner’s insurance to keep your boat afloat!  A standard homeowner’s policy provides only limited coverage ($1,000 – $1,500) for boats. Plus, normally, the loss must occur at your home.  Damage to your boat during launch, while in transit, or while out on the water may not be covered by your homeowner’s insurance.  That’s where a boat insurance policy comes in.  Boat insurance also provides an additional important protection:  Liability insurance!  This coverage may be invaluable in case you cause injuries to a fellow boater or swimmer, or property damage to another boat or a dock.
